What truly set David Kasyoki Wamutoo apart was his guitar playing. Fellow musicians often describe his technique as extraordinarily complex. He could weave bass lines, rhythm, chords and lead melodies into a seamless performance, making it sound as though several guitarists were playing at once. His solos closely mirrored the vocal melodies, a style that became his signature and influenced a generation of Kamba musicians. Even today, many live bands find his arrangements difficult to replicate. His talent was recognized nationally. In 1992, Kasyoki won both the Kenya Artist of the Year and Kenya Album of the Year awards for the album Cheza Na Katitu, cementing his reputation as one of Kenya's leading musicians during the golden era of benga. Sadly, Kasyoki died on January 20, 2004, at only 35 years old, cutting short a remarkable career.
