I’m Sophie Chai, a ceramic artist based in Sydney, Australia, specialising in moon jars. You can find more of my work, process and pottery journey on TikTok + Instagram @sophiechaistudio. My work is shaped by the traditional techniques I studied in Japan and Korea. In Bizen, Japan, I worked as an assistant to ceramic artist Kazuya Ishida before travelling to Icheon, South Korea, where I became Korean Master Potter Lee Hyang-gu’s longest-standing international student. Under Master Lee, I learned to throw moon jars in one piece on the wheel, using only my hands - without ribs or shaping tools. Here, I share the practice behind my work, alongside my continued journey learning and refining this remarkable form. My moon jars are available to collectors worldwide, with international shipping from Sydney.
