Chief Riley on the legal justification for racism – The 1888 St. Catherine's Milling case Chief Riley addresses the question of where racism comes from – "the big prize is the resources of the country." The 1888 St. Catherine's Milling case was used as the government's means to denigrate and deny First Nations rights. This legal precedent stood until an Indigenous movement led by Chief Riley entrenched Aboriginal and treaty rights in the Canadian Constitution of 1888.

"Fight Racism head on – don't take it anymore!" That's the advice of former National Chief Delbert Riley. In a context in which Mi'kmaw people are having their treaty rights violated by Provincial government actions which have raided Mi'kmaw peoples homes and stolen from their businesses and left no legal charges to fight, Chief Riley says that is because the Province knows it can't win the fight legally.

Chief Riley sources Canada's racism against Indigenous peoples as explains through the introduction of the 1867 British North America Act that gave the Canadian Parliament the legislative power to enforce the Indian Act in violation of the treaties.
