A US Navy plane went down on this black sand back in 1973. The crew all made it out okay, but the plane is still out there on Sólheimasandur, slowly getting eaten by the sand, ocean at its back, and nothing around it for miles. You can actually walk out and visit it. There’s a dedicated lot right off the Ring Road, about 6km east of Skógar, marked on maps as the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck parking. From there it’s a flat 4km walk across the sand, or grab the shuttle if you’d rather save your legs

Summers where the sun doesn’t set 🇮🇸 Nothing quite like a summer roadtrip around this incredible island. My favorite flower field in California isn’t supposed to be here. Ice plant was brought in from South Africa to keep Highway 1 from sliding into the sea. They found out later that it actually makes landslides worse. It stayed, it spread, and now it’s created one of the most beautiful spots on the California coast, with color peaking late March to early June. I’ve barely scratched the surface of Yosemite in the spring, but after spending years visiting in every other season, I can tell you one thing: this is when the park feels most alive.
