lol turns out it appearas that the lapel mic indeed has built-in noise isolation and there's no way to turn it off.
Oh fun. Went to record audio today and I can't get macOS's voice isolation microphone mode to stop clipping out what it thinks is noise. Both "Standard" and "Voice Isolation" modes record identical sounds. Computers are lovely.
