#Mathstodon, can can we figure out the #physics behind this?
At Alnwick Gardens, the water feature #wateglass shows some mysterious behaviour. The water falls from a circular basin, forming a vertical sheet that oscillates towards the bottom. This flutter is surprisingly aggressive and persistent. It disappears when the water flow is disturbed at the top, but when the disturbance is removed the os

After two excellent days at the #TMiP25 conference, we spent Saturday morning looking for maths in the Coventry Transport Museum with @TeaKayB
Let's start with a very nice explanation, unfortunately slightly hidden, of towing links for tractors.

Overall it's a lovely museum that deserves much more time than the one hour I've spent looking at its exhibits!
And they're not afraid to mention math(s)!

And, annoyingly but not surprisingly, there were a few less-than-perfect graphs

Another video. This one shows the flow returning to its oscillation after being disturbed by putting a finger on the rim.
My animated maths video for this year* is about a mathematical model for traffic flow - and how to visualise the method of characteristics to solve PDEs.

In the chronological exhibitions it was interesting to see how the size of the cars evolved (1930s cars were huge!) It would be a great activity to try and graph out this evolution! Both as an exercise in graphing/data visualisation and as…
And then There's this intermediate example. It has the spokes going straight to the centre, but an additional linkage to help transfer the torque from the pedals to the rim of the wheel!
A more modern bike, on the other hand, has spokes that go slightly off-centre, connecting to the side of the hub. This is a more rigid construction, better linking the hub and the rim!
Keeping with the mechanical theme, let's compare the spoke arrangements in old and modern bikes. This 19th century penny farthing has spokes that are radii of the wheel - they point straight at the centre.

Anyone interested in absurd physics questions, mathematical music, neuroimaging, and spreadsheet shenanigans?
Tomorrow evening I'm participating in the 5th @clopenmicnight, an online event that features all of the above! (Don't worry - I a…
