2026 is on track to be the warmest (~35% chance) or second warmest (~63%) year on record, while 2027 is very likely (92% chance) to be the warmest on record on the back of a growing super El Niño event. A recent viral graph found fewer days in the contiguous US above 95F/100F/105F today than in the 1930s.
But the graph is misleading – it fails to correct for changing measurement times and techniques, and overstates regional warmth. I take a deep dive at The Climate Brink: https://www.theclimatebrink.com/p/hot-days-cold-thermometers

Fires in France have now burned over 91,000 acres, by far the most of any year since the satellite record started in 2006. Current area burned is about 34x larger than this date in a typical (median) year:

The claim that "pink elephants cannot fly" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that pink elephants can fly. 🙄

In Spain fires are currently running second highest for this point in the year at 8x the area burned in a typical year, but are still well below the record for annual area burned set just last year (2025):

And if we look at trends in days over 95F/100F/105F globally we see strong increases over time, particularly after 1970. The 1930s was exceptionally warm in the Midwestern US but barely registers across the full global land area.
If we zoom out from days over 95F to broader trends in US maximum temperatures (TMax) we see robust warming over the past 130 years:
We can also break the changes in hot days over time down by US climate region. Here we see the 1930s blowing away modern records in the Upper Midwest, the Northern Rockies and Plains, but the modern era having more >95F days in the South, …
Using data the accounts for changing measurement techniques and sensors and using data that spans the full US (rather than overweighting the midwest) gives a somewhat different story. The 1930s were still exceptional, but the number of day…
Second, the viral graph (by CFACT analyst Chris Martz) does not provide a representative assessment of US temperatures. It draws from stations that are concentrated in the Midwest where the effects of the 1930s Dust Bowl era were most pron…
First, the graph uses "raw" daily station data. But almost all US stations shifted their observation times from late afternoon to early morning between 1950 and 1980, resulting in a cool bias. New electronic sensors installed after 1980 al…
