A bit of early-season scything practice this morning, with the aim of getting my scything muscles in shape before needing to cut the main wildflower meadow in July / August.
This section of long grass hasn't been cut at all for 2 or 3 years so was quite tough and tangled; a 2m-wide swathe roughly 50m long took around 2.5 hours to cut.

It's possible that my Dad bought this steel paint kettle new in the 1940s or 50s but it's more likely that he inherited it from *his* Dad who was a professional Painter and Decorator in the 1920s, and would have used it on a daily basis.
While it's now reserved for oil-based timber preservative, it pleases me that something likely to be 100 years old is still perfectly serviceable and a pleasure t

The wildflower meadow is currently dominated by tall, white Ox-Eye Daisies. Those seem very happy with the poor-quality clay soil at the far (West-most) end, whereas the more fertile soil at the near (East-most) end favours the grasses.
There are some other flowers mixed in - e.g. Clover and Birdsfoot Trefoil - but those grow low to the ground.
Quite a few Knapweed plants are just starting to flow

Rather pleasing how well the Actual solar generation followed the Forecast (red dots) all morning.
Rather *less* pleasing that the battery was fully-filled by 13:00 so generation was curtailed down to about 7kW because of the site export limit imposed by the grid operator.
I really must sort out some mechanism to force-export from the battery during the evening peak, to create space in the battery

Pleased that I managed to unblock the surprisingly-complicated windscreen washer jet on the BMW i3. Quite a bit of head-scratching to work out how to unclip it from underneath - without breaking anything - but as with a lot of things it tu…
All finished by 4pm.
Now I "simply" have to rake up all the cuttings and add them to the compost heap - then use the mower with its grass-box to remove the growth the scythe didn't manage to cut, reducing the soil fertility to favour flowe…
The only plants still flowering are a few examples of Yarrow, Ragwort and Field Scabious, so I don't feel too guilty for cutting those down.
This Common Blue butterfly has some other flowers to feed on nearby.

Nearly finished scything the wildflower meadow: 8 swathes cut over the past 5 days and 1.5 to go, which will get finished this afternoon.
(The separate, overgrown strip on the left is a swale that is not cut, remaining as a refuge for wild…

The wildflower meadow is coping well with the lack of rain and showing a good range of grass and flower species. The clover and the white ox-eye daisies have mostly finished flowering and now purple common knapweed is the dominant flower -…
