This dissected mouse is a Logitech M-BD58, one of the first popular optical mice from around the turn of the century. If you're over 30, you've probably seen one. The other mouse is a M-BJ58, which looks identical. Clearly one is a later version of the other, but I don't know which.

In other shenanigans, did I melt a PLA cup into a plastic puck on the stove? Yes. Did it become irrevocably fused to the aluminum? Also yes.

I'm told that the BJ58 has a sensor that outputs quadrature encoding, which means it can be turned into an Amiga mouse. I haven't heard anything about the BD58, so I'm curious to see if it's the same, and what that can tell us about their relationship. From a cursory look, it seems the BJ uses a smaller controller chip. The sensor has different markings. There's a few other minor differences, but

One last thing, a little pixelated heart. This cruder model worked well enough, but it never flows enough to get rid of the voids. I started it by melting in little bits with the heat gun, then finished it in the oven.
Also this mold had e…
Presumably I could turn this stuff into filament but it’s hardly worth the effort. Flattened out sheets of it would probably work well with vacuum molding.
Shredded some more and tried it in a smaller, more detailed mold. Just heated this one with a heat gun since it was so small. Turned out not great, but I’m not too surprised by that.
Did I immediately try again with a silicone mold? Heck yeah.

This version also doesn’t have a weight, or even a place to screw one in.
This is the white version of the M-BJ58, which looks like a later cost-reduced revision. No gel surround for the logo, but it does still have the transparent bottom.
Also interesting is the board shows the M-BJ69 (no I can’t believe they s…
Stick a fork in this wheel, it’s done. Seller definitely didn’t disclose this. It was cheaper than the others ($13 shipped) but that sucks.
Anyway, I think all the electrical bits are working properly and I'm out of time besides. V2 of the MFM emulator board has been sent off. If I can track down this bug, I hope to have a couple prototypes to lend out for testing at #VCFMW. I…
